Wrong Questions: Will Kevin Skinner Win America’s Got Tallent?

by Todd Taskey on August 5, 2009

America’s Got Talent is one of the top rated shows on TV this summer and I suspect a lot of people will tune in to see if he does win, but that’s the wrong question.

Better Question:  Why do you like him so much?

At some level, business revolves around working with people we like.  Being likable is an important business asset.  Knowing this, I’m trying to identify why I like this chicken catcher so much and why his performance was so moving.

Was it song choice?

My expectations?

His mannerisms and accent?

His presentation and clothing?

A lot of the acts on this show seem staged and contrived, but Kevin Skinner seemed authentic.  Because of that, I want to learn and hear more, I wonder what is his thinking, what song he’ll do next, if he’ll advance to the next round?

He has my interest, affection and attention.  In a crowded world, that is very valuable.  I suspect AGT producers have already figured this out and fully expect he will reach the finals (remember, this is a business).

There is a valuable business lesson here, but I can put my finger on exactly why I like him so much, can you help…?

I’m thinking he got to you because he was authentic (an overused word); he had something to say and meant what he said.

The song choice was a factor too. It stayed true to him and his voice. Nothing unnatural, like for example a Queen song might have been. (love them BTW)

And you know what? Anything that you have in common is an instant connection. Kevin Skinner got to me because we have something in common. I would vote for him even if he was only ‘good enough’ just because he had been a chicken catcher – I did some chicken catching in my teens.

I don’t place much emphasis on clothing or accents as I’ve dealt with people from many backgrounds. Those are almost distractions from the business at hand.

So…authenticity in the message…and for me also a common connection.

He got to you because of he innocence, his naivete. We would all love to be able to sit on our front porch and count the stars. We would all love to have been raised by our Grandma and worship the ground she walked on and start writing songs and become a pretty fabulous guitar player because of our love for this woman. It’s romantic. We don’t ALL live in big cities. Some of us count the stars from our front porches. And they would have laughed at us, too. But, they would welcome the opportunity to sit on our porches with us and drink some white lightening and after dark, count the stars, laugh at stupid puns and play a bit of guitar and sing some good old songs.

I can only watch Kevin on youtube. You see in Australia we look at things a lot different. If Kevin came out on Australia’s got talent we would not have been laughed at when he said he was a chicken catcher.
We judge a person on who he is and not what he dose. But that is changing here also. Not so bad as America but changing. I knew Kevin was the real deal before he sang. Last year an American came on Australia’s got talent. He was big noting himself. You would say he was saying I’m the best think since sliced bread. If you think and say things like that here, you better not sing one note out of key or you are out. Kevin didn’t do that. How do I know. Because Kevin said. >>>”I hope the crowd will like what I’m doing”. And that’s what that American person should have said on Aust got talent. Just to let you know he sang out of key and the crowd booed him off. He said he could not understand why he got booed off. We call it self delusion. I like Kevin very much. I would not be ashamed to call him a friend. Here is an example >> Go into Australia’s got talent on youtube and type in the name Mark Vincent. Australia fell in love with this young man straight away. And Kevin is the same as him in your hearts. It was this year that Mark won Australia’s got talent.
I am so happy that he is on his way. Win or loose >> He is already a winner.
